The visitors of the Western part of Romania will find a rich variety of landmarks and traces of the medieval history of Romania. The tour propose monuments of religious architecture as Curtea de Arges cathedral or Horezu monastery, beautiful cities with medieval outlook as Sibiu, Alba Iulia, Cluj Napoca, Oradea, or Timisoara, the impressive, fairy tale looking medieval castle Corvin, Beautiful and scenic mountain roads as Transfagarasan (summer program), Transalpina, Olt river canion (winter program) or Jiu river canion, archeological remains form the Roman times, as Sarmisegetuza Ulpia Traiana, as well as underground natural attractions as Turda salt mine.

Itinerary

DAY 1 | ARRIVAL IN BUCHAREST

Meet and assist at Otopeni Bucharest Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

DAY 2 | BUCHAREST – SIBIU - MEDIAS

Breakfast at the hotel. Meeting with the guide and bus at the hotel and departure to Sibiu. The tour is heading north, passing over the Carpathians Mountains into Transylvania **. On the way stop to visit Curtea de Arges cathedral, one of the most famous monasteries in Romania. Walking tour in Sibiu, including The Big Square, The Little Square, Huet Square, Iron Bridge, The Evangelical Church and The Orthodox Church. Transfer to Medias for dinner and overnight.

**Between 1st of July and 15th October, the Transfagarasan Road is usually open and we can visit the Curtea de Arges Monastery; when the weather conditions do not permit it and the road is closed, we will visit the Cozia Monastery, which is located on the beautiful Olt river Valley

DAY 3 | MEDIAS – ALBA IULIA

Breakfast in the hotel. Panoramic tour of Medias. The trip continues in Transylvania, getting insights of two beautiful medieval landmarks from the SW of this magnificent territory, Corvin Castle and Alba Iulia citadel.

Transfer further to the hotel in Alba Iulia. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 4 | ALBA IULIA – CLUJ-NAPOCA

Breakfast in the hotel. Drive to Turda salt mine, one of the main underground natural attraction from the area Afternoon in Cluj-Napoca, the second largest city in Romania, whichheld the titles of European Youth Capital in 2015 and European City of Sport in 2018. Walking tour downtown of the main square; the visits include St. Michael’s Cathedral, Matthias Corvinus statue, Banffy Palace (outside visit), then Opera House (outside visit) and the Franciscan Monastery. Overnight.

DAY 5 | CLUJ-NAPOCA – ORADEA – TIMISOARA

Breakfast in the hotel. The drive heads west, crossing the Western Carpathian Mountains to Oradea, the first sight for today. In addition to the many Baroque buildings, Oradea is remarkable for its particularly rich collection of Art Nouveau architecture. Afternoon at Recas Wineries (wine-tasting) – one of the largest wineries in Romania. The day ends in Timisoara city. Afternoon walking tour, including the city main squares (Liberty, Union and Victory). Overnight.

DAY 6 | TIMISOARA – TARGU JIU

Breakfast in the hotel. A short visit in the morning to the 1989 Revolution Memorial, then drive inside the mountains in order to see the ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the capital of the Roman Dacia. The end of today in Tg. Jiu admiring the open-air monumental sculptures of Constantin Brancusi (world famous sculptor). Table of Silence, The Gate of the Kiss, and Endless Column commemorate the courage and sacrifice of Romanians who in 1916 defended Târgu Jiu from the forces of the Central Powers. Overnight in Tg. Jiu.

DAY 7 | TARGU JIU – BUCHAREST

Breakfast in the hotel. Returning to Bucharest through beautiful hilly scenery, including a short uphill ride to Transalpina – stunning mountain road. Another landmark for today consists in a visit of Horezu Monastery. The school of mural and icon painting established at the monastery in the 18th century was famous throughout the Balkan region. Overnight in Bucharest.

DAY 8 | BUCHAREST- FLIGHT HOME

Breakfast at the hotel. Half day tour of Bucharest. The primary entry point into Romania, Bucharest, known in the past as “The Little Paris,” today it has become a very interesting mix of old and new that has little to do with its initial reputation. Finding a 300 year old church, a steel-and-glass office building and Communist-era apartment blocks next to one another is a common sight.
