Transylvania, a name that instantly brings to mind images of craggy mountains shrouded in dense, dark, forests that slowly roll their mists onto silent villages, and how, towering above the haunted landscape, below a dramatic full moon, rise the towers and battlements of a centuries old castle. Well, rest assured, the land that gave us Dracula, has no shortage of jaw-dropping castles pitched precariously on rocky hilltops. There’s eerie Bran Castle, of course, the inspiration for the home of Bram Stoker’s fictional count.

But this is just one of many.

There’s Hunedoara’s 14th-century Corvin Castle, or King Carol I’s sumptuous 19th-century, Peles Castle. Also, The Land  Beyond The Forest, for that is the meaning of the name Transylvania, has a host of fascinating medieval burgs like Brasov, Cluj, Sighisoara and Sibiu. Their centuries old, cobbled walkways beautifully host chic street-side cafes, and off the gothic and baroque buildings bounce the sounds and music of student bars and clubs. And, in contrast to it all, Transylvania’s Saxon villages boast fortified churches that are still shrouded in silence since the day they were build, half a millennium ago.
